South Korea Passes (Highly Restrictive) Medical Marijuana Law

Korea Marijuana

South Korea is the first country in East Asia to pass a medical marijuana law.

The South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety acknowledged that it would permit the use of marijuana-based medications such as Epidiolex, Sativex and Marinol in the coming months for use by those with HIV/AIDS, cancer or epilepsy, SF Gate reports.

“South Korea legalizing medical cannabis, even it if will be tightly controlled with limited product selection, represents a significant breakthrough for the global cannabis industry,” Vijay Sappani said. “The importance of Korea being the first country in East Asia to allow medical cannabis at a federal level should not be understated. Now it’s a matter of when other Asian countries will follow South Korea, not if.”

Some may find this reform surprising due to the recent announcement by the South Korean government which warned its citizens visiting marijuana legalized countries that it is illegal for them to use marijuana anywhere.
