Indiana Lawmakers Conflicted on Marijuana-Related Bills

Indiana MMJ

Indiana lawmakers have fought back and forth for months regarding the 10 marijuana-related bills filed this legislative session. Most have been killed in the legislative process, but a few are still moving forward. One that is still surviving the fight is House Bill 1148.

House Bill 1148 would give parents immunity from prosecution who are treating their children with CBD products, according to Greensburg Daily News. The doctors recommending that patients use CBD oil would also be immune from prosecution. Representative William Friend introduced House Bill 1148.

Friend said, “Over the last few years, we have – in the AG committee – sponsored bills for industrial hemp. Not only for introduction as another crop that Hoosier farmers could produce, but also for its medicinal values. We’ve heard some compelling testimony for the last three to four years from desperate parents who have children with juvenile epilepsy. These children may have multiple seizures per hour. They may have to wear helmets. They’ve used all the pharmaceutical remedies such as sedatives, barbiturates and other medications and have been unsuccessful.”

Friend pointed out that there is an 80-percent success rate in seizure reduction when using CBD oil as a treatment option.

He said, “I am not proposing that we legalize marijuana or medical marijuana or even CBD oil. I just want to make it possible for these parents not to be prosecuted.”

Representative Don Lehe does not support medical marijuana legalization, but does support this bill.

Lehe said, “Everything involved in the cannabis family is designated as illegal. Until they (marijuana and CBD oil) are separated, the oil is considered illegal. CBD oil has virtually no THC.”
